Growing up Tips: Using Your Resources Wisely

Resources are material and non material possessions of the family which are used to satisfy needs or to reach a goal. Material resources include money, time, commodities, and facilities, like food, clothing, books, jewelry, equipment, appliances, the fruit trees in your yard, the parks, schools, libraries, and health centers in your community. Non material or human resources include you and your family. Each of you makes use of your own energy, abilities, knowledge, talents or skills, and your attitude towards work.

In your everyday activities, you make use of different material and human resources. For instance, when mother goes to market, she makes use of money to buy food and other needs. When she prepares meals, she uses her energy, time, ability, and skill in cooking. And when you clean the house, you make use of your time, energy, and skill. You use house cleaning tools like brooms, rags, a coconut husk, or a floor polisher which in turn makes use of electricity.

It is important to make use both material and human resources wisely. It is wise to remember the following:

1. Do not spend time and energy sitting idly or talking. Instead, you can study your lesson, or help your mother with the household work. This way, you can be of helpful and being a loving and sensible member of your family.

2. Use your home appliances and equipment with care so they do not break down. This will save money which would have been spent for repair.

3. Set aside an amount of your school allowance for savings. You can use your savings in times of need or when you need to buy more important things.

4. Do things properly and on time. Save water and electricity by turning off faucets and electric switches when not in use. Repair faucet leaks immediately.

5. Save fuel by reducing the heat when the food starts to boil.

6. Learn how to make use of your time and energy by scheduling the things you have to do every day. Little savings on money, time, energy, and proper use and care of household equipment and appliances will become big savings in the future. Big savings will enable you to buy more material resources and use your time and energy for more activities that will satisfy your needs and wants.

Managing and using your resources wisely, you will develop self-discipline and confidence which will help you in your every day life. It will also help you mold to become a better person.
